Graduate Showcase 2025

Join us as ACO graduate optometrists present a single standout case study from their first year of practice. As part of a leading public health eye care provider, these early career optometrists have navigated rare conditions, challenging diagnoses and innovative treatment plans often unexplored in other optometry settings.

Case Topics

More than just diplopia: complications following medulloblastoma treatment?

Presented by Haila Mohseni

Haila’s case follows a 23-year-old female patient who presented at ACO Eye Health Carlton with double vision after medulloblastoma surgery. However, further examination uncovered additional post-treatment complications, requiring collaborative care to achieve the best possible outcome.

The importance of recognising keratoconus: diagnosing and managing an advanced case

Presented by Anna Reid

Anna’s case follows a 24-year-old female patient who progressed from no clinical signs of keratoconus to an advanced case in one eye. Anna will discuss key clinical findings, the critical role of early detection, and essential messages optometrists should be sharing with patients.

Accommodative esotropia in a refugee child: highlighting optometry's role in complex coordinated care

Presented by Rumeysa Doger

Rumeysa’s case follows a 10-year-old male patient diagnosed with accommodative esotropia; a condition commonly seen at the ACO Eye Health’s Paediatric Clinic. What makes this case unique is the patient’s complex medical history, including congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and abnormal abducens nerves due to consanguinity. Rumeysa will discuss optometry’s role in coordinating care for patients with additional health challenges and the importance of adapting communication to support diverse and vulnerable populations.

Pigment dispersion glaucoma: management considerations in a public health setting

Presented by Grace Kennedy

Grace’s case follows a 43-year-old Caucasian male diagnosed with pigment dispersion glaucoma (PDG), whose care was impacted by housing instability, mental health challenges, and substance dependence. Despite initial treatment with Ganfort for intraocular pressure control, poor adherence led to disease progression. Grace will explore the complexities of managing glaucoma in a public health setting, highlighting the importance of addressing both medical and social factors to improve patient outcomes.
