Anterior Segment Workshop
Due to the popularity of last year's Anterior Segment Workshop, it's returning in 2025! Join us for this half‑day, in‑person clinical workshop on Sunday 14 September.
Led by renowned optometrist, Dr Blair Lonsberry (Pacific University, Oregon), the session offers practical expertise in assessing, managing and following up corneal and conjunctival foreign bodies. You’ll gain proven tips and techniques for safe, efficient removal, along with guidance on supportive therapeutic care.
The clinical teaching is paired with a two‑hour hands‑on workshop using the SimulEYE® epithelial removal model (non‑animal‑derived). Under the guidance of Dr Lonsberry and other experienced clinicians, you’ll practise techniques including collecting conjunctival swabs, removing corneal foreign bodies, and performing corneal epithelial debridement using tools such as standard hypodermic needles and the Alger brush.
This workshop is part of a double-bill CPD event, with a separate Paediatric Masterclass taking place in the morning.
Presentation 1: External Techniques for the Cornea – Clinical Assessment and Treatment
This session from optometrist Dr Blair Lonsberry from the Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon USA provides optometrists with essential knowledge and hands-on techniques to confidently evaluate and treat corneal conditions requiring therapeutic intervention. It emphasises accurate assessment, practical removal of foreign bodies and rust rings, and effective corneal debridement, alongside appropriate therapeutic interventions to support healing in cases such as recurrent corneal erosion and manage the complications of corneal injury.
Presentation 2: External Techniques for the Conjunctiva – Clinical Assessment and Treatment
Focused on real-world clinical presentations, this lecture from optometrist Dr Blair Lonsberry from the Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon USA equips optometrists with the skills to confidently assess and manage a range of conjunctival conditions including injuries and foreign body presentations. It covers triage, safe removal techniques, and the use of topical therapeutics to support healing. Attendees will also learn proper conjunctival swabbing methods, how to differentiate lesions that mimic foreign bodies, and strategies for managing paediatric cases with care and clear communication.
Practical Workshop
This hands-on clinical workshop, led by Dr Blair Lonsberry allows optometrists to build confidence in key external eye procedures using the SimulEYE® epithelial removal models, a non-animal-based simulation tool. Participants will practise techniques such as corneal foreign body removal using a hypodermic needle, cotton bud and Alger brush; epithelial debridement; and the removal of foreign bodies. The workshop also covers safe and effective conjunctival swab collection, with a focus on aseptic technique, post-procedural care, and the importance of hand hygiene in clinical practice.
