Everyone has the right to make their own decisions and to receive the necessary support to do so – including adults living with a disability.

This information session is led by Tarli Sali, Senior Projects Officer from the Office of the Public Advocate. With extensive experience in counselling, education, and supporting families in emotionally and medically challenging situations, Tarli will introduce practical communication skills designed to boost clinicians' confidence in helping patients make informed healthcare decisions.

The Healthy Discussions Project is shaped by the voices of those with lived experience of disability. This presentation features Michelle Wilcox, who will share her personal journey and insights from navigating the healthcare system.

Presentation 2: Supporting Patients with Facial Eye or Facial Disfigurements: Skills for Optometrists

Date: Tuesday 11 February
Time: 8.30 – 9.30pm
Where: Online via Zoom
CPD: 1.5C

In this session with Dr. Zali O’Dea, we will explore the psychosocial and psychological aspects of living with a facial disfigurement (FD) or facial eye disfigurement (FED). Her perspective is informed by her academic achievements in education and counselling, together with lived experience of third nerve palsy. Zali will guide optometrists through clinical challenges, unpack unknown biases, offer a way forward in approaching patients living with FED/FD, and provide a clear referral pathway for patients who are in need of support.

Dr. Zali O’Dea has a long and varied history of research, presenting, several academic and non-academic literature publications. In 2024, Dr. O’Dea presented at the World Retinoblastoma Conference in Hawaii, the Australian Ophthalmic Nurses Association’s Conference, and International Parents Day with the Skin and Positive Appearance Hub (SKAPH) Africa. Additionally, Dr. O’Dea guest lectured at both Deakin University and the University of Hawaii.
